Why Is Communication Important
Effective communication is the key to open the door to
many solutions. Poor communication can inhibit a team from moving forward. I
have the wonderful opportunities present throughout my careers which enables me
to communicate daily using multiple sources. According to Patrick, he stated
there are three steps to improve workplace communication (Bosworth, 2018). I truly
believe in the awareness stage. Being aware means the individual understands
his/her communication. I understand my strengths and opportunities for growth.
It all starts if an individual can understand their communication impact
towards people. We must take into consideration the we way speak which includes
our volume, inflection, tone, articulation, language used, and speed. The
second stage helps with understanding communication within various members.
Various job skills may require an individual to comprehend and respond at
different levels. A marketing professional may communicate with creativity and
animation. Contrarily, a data analyst may need more time to respond and make a
choice. Patrick stated step three is about creating a communication strategy. I
support the idea having regular meetings can improve communication. I have
created dynamic and fun team meetings where individuals are recognized for
their communication achievements. Trainees have understood their way of
communication and adapted to implement coaching sessions.
I certainly standby Michael’s five important
characteristics to team communication. All the factors are important, however
there were a few which really stands out. Being clear is utmost important when
going over objectives and responsibilities. I have observed over the years, a
lack of understanding the task and duties involved can impair a team’s
objective. To complete strong and efficiently, everyone should clarify and
confirm understanding of their task. Along with clarity comes being nice. We
are all humans! Being polite only reciprocates the same communication. Who does
not agree with this concept? The minute attitudes suffer then the team dynamic
cascades. It is better to clarify with the speaker if something needs to be
communicated due to misunderstanding. If not, this can cause many chatter
issues (Rogers, 2016).
In addition, virtual communication can intensify
misunderstanding. For example, the use of e-mails does not provide any
non-verbal context to the message. According to Clare, non-verbal cues provide
an abundance of emotions with facial expressions and body gestures cannot
portray true human feelings (Gross, 2016). Even the urgent or happy messages
can be misinterpreted if not well written. It is vital to probe to seek
understanding. In my opinion those who seek clarity can better perform. Just
look at all your mobile service providers. Try contacting their offices and
determine if the representative has clarified understanding by effectively
asking the right questions.
Ineffective feedback is another reason why teams
experience barriers. I certainly agree with Janelle’s point on being open to
feedback encourages a healthy atmosphere (Lacomb, 2018). In today’s customer focused industries, feedback is what is the driver towards innovation and
market growth. I have observed the top teams are open to ways of implementing
procedures. These teams are agile and strive for excellence.
